Welcome to Warly Senior Section - 2009 / 10 Season

Formed in 1922 this season Warlingham are hoping that last year's consolidation can lead to bigger and better things. Having won the Surrey Seven-a-Side Tournament in May 2005, followed by becoming Surrey Division One Champions in 2006 and then Champions of London South West IV in 2008, we enter the current season as one of the teams to beat in London Division 2 South East - having moved eastwards to face the might of Kent rugby. We have high hopes of doing well and our ambition is to be in the promotion stakes by April 2010 - time will tell!

Head Coach, Steve Wagstaff, has added to the coaching team over the summer bringing in Bill Maynard as forwards coach and Liam Brown to look after the backs.  The whole coaching team demands high commitment on match day and at training.  Following a massive recruitment drive over the summer, Warly hope their enlarged 1st & 2nd team squad will provide the necessary strength in depth to compete for the whole of this season's campaign. The coaching team are ably supported by Neil Crammond as scout, Tony Doe as Manager and Peter Mattison as the vital physiotherapist.  The team captains have been refreshed this year and they will also bring a fresh wave of enthusiasm to the club.

First XV Captain Tony Williams has taken the reins and is in charge of a confident (but never arrogant...) young side who have yet to peak in their rugby careers. We surely have exciting times ahead for these young guns but discipline and commitment must always be in the forefront of our minds.

Ex 1st XV captain Lewis Beake takes over the second string side who were promoted as league champions last season.  Following the summer recruiting there are a number of players in the side who are First XV material and they will undoubtedly keep the First XV honest by pushing for that coveted shirt.

A XV Captain Chris Redmond leads the third string side at Warly.  The A XV is a curious hybrid of a side, with the melting pot containing youngsters making their way in senior rugby, former first XV captains, players who are regular trainers and pushing for the second team and players who are just pushing their luck and going for one more season.  Chris's formidable task is to weld this disparate group into a side capable of playing serious rugby and then doing some serious drinking.  Two jobs he is very well equipped for.

The only returning skipper this year is Steven Gauge (he of Breakfast TV) and he captains the "Ex A XV" with aplomb. If you are looking for social rugby, or fancy taking up the sport for either the first time or after a lengthy sabbatical then please get in touch with Steve.  You have a very real chance of starting on Saturday.

Shane Webzell captains our esteemed Veterans XV who limber up nicely to partake in port at half time and claret post-match.  There may even be some rugby, but I understand this is optional.

The 2009/10 season promises to be another roller-coaster of emotion with heartache and joy at every turn. May we remain 'Mighty' as long as possible - these crests of waves only come round occasionally and we must take advantage of them - nay abuse them - to the full!
